If you’ve never come across these titles, you should get acquainted with them, as they come from the era when Disney licensed games were really great. The only flaw I have to point out is that the emulation sometimes stutters.

For those who didn’t fall in love with these games way back when, they’ll look too childish and, at the same time, punishingly difficult. There are no endless respawns on checkpoints, so if you run out of lives – you gotta start from scratch. For a fan, however, that collection is a real treat.

But, for a true throwback thrill, there are plenty of ways to get it without resorting to unresponsive controls and questionable game design. Like most collections, this is a well-intentioned labor of love for fans of the IPs and 8-bit completists, yet I’m guessing most newcomers won’t see much value in this journey down memory lane.

If you are an oldschool aficionado you’ll get a nice collection of six NES classics with slight enhancements like in-game-saving (once per game) and rewind function to tone down the extreme difficulty. Plus you get a heap of bonus material like artworks and the soundtracks.

The Disney Afternoon Collection is a pretty solid compilation of six classic Disney NES games. The extras included are a nice touch, even if some of the gallery pictures are skewed more toward Ducktales. But the time trial and boss rush features are great for veterans to see how they stack up to the rest of the world, while the rewind feature is great for younger players. Plus you can play two rare NES games without shelling out hundreds of dollars for the original carts.

It’s a sweet trip down to memory lane with some of the best games of the NES era, but we can never shake the feeling that this collection should have gotten the “Duck Tales Remastered” treatment instead of an emulated HD re-release.

You do not buy this collection because of its good games: you buy this because you want to think back to the time you were little, enjoying these games even though they were crazy difficult.

Though every game in The Disney Afternoon Collection is over twenty years old, they all hold up fairly well. The gameplay mechanics are simplistic and can feel a bit dated, but they are great versions of Disney classics. If you are looking for a game with exceptional and more modern gameplay, there are better retro-inspired games on the market. But if you are looking to play these for the nostalgia while taking advantage of their enhanced visual fidelity, this is the bundle to get, especially at its $20 price point.

Anyone with a television could watch it with or without cable and the shows were very popular. So popular infact, that Capcom partnered with Disney in order to make several obligatory 8 bit nes tie in games. 6 of those are presented here. 5 of those 6 games are great. The other, decent. Gamepaly and graphics from the NES has been emulated perfectly here. Remixed soundtrack on the menus are perfect. The addition of a new rewind button makes beating most of these a cinch. You'll love this collection if you grew up with the games, enjoy retro gaming, have children that need something simple to play or just want some easy achievements. All others need not apply. The only reason. That this score is an 8 is because I loathe paying 20 bucks for 20 year old games. Wait for a sale.

I’m hopeful this set is just the start of the Capcom/Disney relationship again.

With three hits and three duds from Capcom/Disney years that you might remember with varying levels of fondness, the Disney Afternoon Collection is clearly aimed at children of the 90s. I have trouble seeing its appeal to anyone else. But if vintage duck-based platformers are your thing, grab a Capri Sun and a handful of Gushers and invite your friends over to play.

These side-scrollers have just as much charm now as they did in the late ’80s and early ’90s, and I’m thankful I can finally own DuckTales 2 and Chip n’ Dale Rescue Rangers 2 without spending hundreds of dollars at a retro gaming store. This is a loving and handsome collection. If you had any affinity for these games growing up, I guarantee that they’ll still make you smile.
