Vertigo Games has taken one of virtual reality's most celebrated shooters out of the headset. The developer announced a flatscreen remake of its previously VR-exclusive Arizona Sunshine, with the title revealed via trailer at the Future Games Show: Summer Showcase 2026 and confirmed for PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. A specific release date has not been attached, though the game is due out in 2026.
The original VR game and its subsequent entries are being rebranded to carry the "VR" suffix - the new title is simply called Arizona Sunshine, while the original VR game has been renamed Arizona Sunshine VR.
From first-person VR to third-person action
Compared to the original Arizona Sunshine's first-person perspective, the remake will be a third-person shooter that throws players into a variety of levels against hordes of zombies. Built on the foundation of the series' signature brutal gameplay and the story of Arizona Sunshine VR 2, it features narrative-driven solo play and chaotic co-op in an accessible third-person perspective.
The title will feature an arsenal including pistols, assault rifles, grenade launchers, and flamethrowers, with grenades available when zombie hordes get too large for guns alone. For the first time ever in co-op, players will be able to play as Buddy, the series' canine companion.

Co-op front and centre
In addition to single-player, Arizona Sunshine will support online and split-screen co-op multiplayer. The two-player co-op that defined the VR originals carries over intact, now with the added option of playing as Buddy alongside a human Sunny.

A VR studio breaks its own mould
Vertigo Games had been VR-only for the past decade, making this flatscreen move a meaningful shift in direction. It is not the first time a VR-first game has made the leap - Moss also received a PC and console port. The broader context is hard to ignore: Sony's PSVR2 momentum has slowed, and the wider VR market has faced significant headwinds, giving studios strong commercial reasons to reach the much larger flatscreen audience.
Vertigo Games is a PLAION Group company, with offices in Rotterdam, Amsterdam, and Los Angeles. The VR entries - Arizona Sunshine VR Remake and Arizona Sunshine VR 2 - remain available on PC VR, PlayStation VR2, and Meta Quest.
SmartCDKeys take
The flatscreen version is not a lazy port - switching to a third-person perspective and adding couch co-op suggests Vertigo has put genuine thought into making the game work without a headset. Whether the sun-baked zombie action carries the same visceral impact on a TV as it does in VR remains to be seen, but the broad platform lineup and no-headset-required barrier make this the most accessible the Arizona Sunshine series has ever been.
